The ILMIS Platform was created within the UDIP project “Upgrading Curricula for Industry Purposes” in order to create a link between universities and companies in the engineering field.
The UDIP project lasted from October 2019 to May 2021 and had one main objective to build capacities of Kenyan technical and vocational training in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and biomedical maintenance in two Kenyan partner universities – the Technical University of Kenya and the Technical University of Mombasa. It was financed by the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, managed by the French Embassy in Kenya with the University Paris-Saclay as a main French partner university.
Throughout the project, many trainings were implemented for lecturers from these universities to develop project-based pedagogy and more practical teaching. Curricula in electrical and mechanical engineering were audited and recommendations were made towards the inclusion of these new methods of teaching. One major aspect of the UDIP project was also to create linkage between the universities and the industry. In this regard, the idea of creating the ILMIS platform was raised with three main objectives :
- Give engineering students a better access to work opportunities in companies
- Encourage universities to include academic content adapted to the needs of the industry
- Give the companies a better knowledge about potential human resources available among the students and about interesting research initiatives
