Chemical engineering is concerned with the application of engineering and scientific principles in the conversion of materials and chemicals from one form into another. The work of the chemical engineer involves designing, constructing, operating and maintaining the plants (hardware) and processes (software) that convert one chemical form to another that is of more utility to humanity or is less harmful to the environment. Some of the specific industries in Kenya where Chemical Engineers serve include: petrochemicals, manufacturing of construction materials, food processing, production of pharmaceuticals and home and personal care products. Internationally, chemical engineers serve an even wider role and one will typically find them working in industries as diverse as semiconductor manufacturing, environmental technology, and biotechnology. As the nation of Kenya gears towards Vision 2030 and the expected industrial development, Chemical Engineers will have an  even more significant role in the national economy.
