Materials Engineering derives in the first instance from materials science, which is concerned with the study of structure and composition of materials. Engineers are interested in the study of materials to the extent that virtually every physical engineering production involves the use of materials. Materials engineering is not just concerned with the science of materials but also the production of various types of materials to suit various needs in engineering. Plastics have over the last 60 years or so emerged as major players particularly in the component manufacturing industries in all areas of use, from domestic to all sectors of industry. Their use, together with other materials in the form of engineering composite materials, has extended their use to aerospace as well as energy sectors, thus increasing their utilities. With the acceptance of the obvious existence of crude oil reserves in the country, the missing link in developing a robust plastics industry in the country is the training of competent and knowledgeable personnel on plastics at all levels of the technical ladder. This should be addressed effectively by the Department of Materials and Metallurgy. The Department is also expected to support emerging technologies through training and research on state, processing and production technologies of materials such as engineering composites, engineering ceramics, Nano-materials, powder metallurgy, and high temperature materials.
